Let’s Dive into the First Grade



Dear Parents,

Welcome to one of the most incredible years your child will have in his/her school career! First grade is exciting because of the many new adventures in the world of learning.

The first grade will have an Open House on Thursday, August 16 from 12-6 pm. Please feel free to come by anytime! Our classrooms are located on the first grade blue hall. We look forward to meeting you and sharing with you all the news for the upcoming year. You will receive pertinent information concerning your child and the school year.

Please bring your child's supplies to the meeting. The supply list is updated on our blog. You do not have to put your child's name on his/her supplies except for the T-shirts and inside the pillowcase. Be sure to mark your calendar for August 16th to learn more about making this an incredible year for you and your child.

• Report cards for 3rd nine weeks will come home on THIS Thursday, March 22nd.

• Spring Pictures are THIS Wednesday, March 21st.

• Next Gotcha party will be this Thursday, March 22nd. Please remind your child that they must have 5 Gotchas for the party. These can be earned for good behavior.

• On Friday, March 23rd Coosada is having a balloon release to help raise money for Relay for Life. Each balloon will be released at 2:00 so we will be back in time from the field trip. Please send $2.00 if you would like to release a balloon.

• We are going on a fieldtrip Friday, March 23rd to see, “The Lorax.” Please send your permission form, lunch order and $13.00 by Monday, March 19th. All chaperones must provide their own transportation. We are not buying ANY concessions at the theater because we are eating lunch after the movie. Parents if you have not ordered a child’s lunch, you are responsible for getting your own lunch.

• Spring Break is March 26-30. Enjoy your break!

• Kindergarten registration will start on Tuesday, April 2nd at 9:00. This will also be the day you can request teachers for next year.

Reading: Thursday, March 22nd, take a test on, Henry and Mudge and Mrs. Hopper’s House.

We will learn about /oo/ in moon. We will also learn about the suffixes –ly and –ful. We will learn that the suffix –ly means “in a ____way” and the suffix –ful means “full of.” Our reading skill will be cause and effect. Our grammar skill will be to learn about adjectives that compare.

High-Frequency words: told, because, only, dance, across, opened, shoes



Beginning, 3rd nine weeks, your child will have to read the test by themselves. We will also take some of the test online and some on paper.



Math: We will review adding and subtracting double digit numbers without regrouping (22+23=45) (34-13=21) and 3 numbers (2+3+1=6).
